Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project (ERCP)?
The Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project (ERCP) is a large-scale irrigation project in the state of Rajasthan, India, that was initiated in the 1950s. The main objective of the project is to provide irrigation water to the semi-arid regions of eastern Rajasthan, which are prone to droughts and face water scarcity.
The ERCP involves the construction of a network of canals, distributaries, and reservoirs to channel water from the Chambal River and its tributaries to the agricultural lands of eastern Rajasthan. The project has several components, including the Parbati-Kalisindh-Chambal Link Project, which involves linking the Parbati and Kalisindh rivers to the Chambal River, and the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) Canal, which diverts water from the BBMB dam in Himachal Pradesh to eastern Rajasthan.
The ERCP has significantly increased the irrigated area in eastern Rajasthan and has helped to increase agricultural productivity and improve rural livelihoods. However, the project has also faced criticism for its high cost, environmental impacts, and displacement of local communities.
